Just an update on projects at the Nike sites. [ July 22, 2003 ]
We have an intern this summer who is completing a report on the landscape and changes to the Guardian Park memorial that was dedicated in August of 1974. This memorial is for the victims of the Nike Ajax explosion that occurred in 1958 in Middletown. The memorial stone was moved from Middletown when the site closed to Highlands and when that closed it came to Sandy Hook. If anyone knows a person who attended the ceremony in Middletown or Sandy Hook, about the moving of the memorial between sites, or when the Nike Ajax first came to Sandy Hook (early 1970s before Guardian Park was created) please contact me.
This intern, from Rutgers University is also photodocumenting the launch and radar sites. I will continue to send a few photos at a time because my server is very slow. We were able to enter two of the launch elevators and discover that while there is not any equipment, they are in decent condition. There is about an inch to 3 inches of water on the bottom.
Attached are two photographs showing the walkway that exists between the IFC area C-1 to the barracks area.
The first photo shows the only part that was visible before the clearing.
Americorps cleared the entire length of the walkway.
I hope you enjoy these updates.
